windows_mobile_6.5In May this year, we wrote that Google expects around 18 Android-based handsets to be released before the end of 2009, and it seemed like quite a lot. Now, Microsoft steps up to the challenge.

According to Benjamin Tan, senior director of GCR Mobile Team Unit at Microsoft China, over 30 smartphones running on Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 will be launched this year, by as many as 15 different vendors.

Given the fact that Windows Mobile 6.5 is not even available yet (first devices based on the OS will appear on the 6th of October), this sounds like a bold prediction, but Microsoft has obviously managed to get great support from manufacturers for their new mobile platform.

Manufacturers that will be offering a Windows Mobile 6.5 phone this year are HTC, Acer, Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, Sony Ericsson, Toshiba, Hewlett-Packard. On the telecom end of the specter, we can expect WinMo 6.5 phones from AT&T, Sprint Nextel, Verizon Wireless, Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone, NTT DoCoMO, Softbank Mobile, SKT, Telstra and Telus.
