Bum marketing is a form of affiliate marketing that uses all free methods to market affiliate products. The phrase “bum marketing” was coined by internet guru Travis Sago when he said that it’s so easy that even a bum off of the street could do it and be able to make money. Bum marketing is great for new internet marketers and those who do not have the money to invest in building internet real estate right off of the bat. It’s free and it works.

With any affiliate marketing type campaign, the first thing you need to do is choose a product to market. Typically, new marketers will start by marketing ClickBank products. ClickBank is the premier source for digital download products that pay out hefty commissions.

Once a bum marketer has chosen their product, they begin to do keyword research. There are a few different methods of doing keyword research. You could use a tool such as Google AdWords Keyword Tool or simply do a Google search for keywords until you find one low enough in competition to begin writing an article base on.

The next step is creating a Blogger account or Squidoo lens for your affiliate links. Here is where you do a bit of pre-advertising. It is also highly recommended to add some useful content. The products home page is designed to sell the product. Your job is just to get someone interested enough to click on your affiliate link. There’s no need to go off on a long sales tangent.

Now it’s time for the bulk work of bum marketing, article writing. Article writing is the key to bum marketing success. If you don’t know how to write articles, don’t worry. It’s not rocket science. In fact, it doesn’t even have to be perfect. Bum marketing through writing articles is a numbers game. You want to write as many articles as possible around your keywords so anytime someone does a Google search on that specific keyword, they’re bound to land on one or more of your articles.

Once you’ve written a bunch of articles you’ll need to submit them to several popular article directories. The more article directories you can submit them to, the better. At the least, submit to the top 10 article directories. Each article directory allows you a space called the author bio. This is the place where you put a link back to your Blogger or Squidoo lens. In theory, it works like this: people read your article, they click on the link in your bio box, they click on your affiliate link, they buy the product, you make money.

Now that you know the basics of bum marketing, what are you waiting for? Get to work making those affiliate commissions. But beware! Like any type of business, this takes a lot of work and time. Getting your first sale is the hardest, and largely dependant upon how much work and time you’re willing to put into your campaigns. Bum marketing is not for everyone, but if it sounds like it is for you then bum market away.
