1) The existing listing saturation: This is the number of pages which have been listed, cached and indexed within each of the major search engines. Each page listing will be producing a level of visitor traffic, each associated to different groups of keywords and search terms. It’s essential to make sure existing page URL’s remain the same or old URL’s are directly mapped to the new site. Making sure that every page directly maps to its new version.

2) The existing link popularity: This is the number of pages which form one way links back to the old site or where the old site has been directly referenced by another website using a hyperlink. These include 3rd party websites, directories, social media sites, articles, news and review websites etc. The Links form the basis of the sites popularity, and page rank. It’s essential to make sure that all links remain live and point to the same active page weather new or old.

Both of these areas are directly related to the old sites existing search engine presence and performance. If a strategy for moving and maintaining these links is not put in place before the DNS is transferred to the new site, it is possible that the new site will receive a massive drop in Page Rank, Trust Rank and listing saturation. It can take up to 6 months to recover from this type of situation and unfortunately there would be a percentage of links to the site which will be lost forever.

There are two main strategies which can be used to prevent this from happening and to maintain the sites online presence:

1) To use all existing URL strings, page titles and meta data in the formation of the new site and its pages. The content, page titles and meta data can be improved or adjusted but the relevance of each page will need to be maintained. With the creation of most new site upgrades, this is the most practical way forward and is more time efficient. As the site and its pages will appear the same to the search engines but just upgraded (i.e. the page URL is identical, but the page content and files sizes will be different.), page rank, link popularity and link saturation will be maintained and transferred to the new site. The search engines will notice a difference in page size, files sizes and file names etc. This should improve search engine interest, as they will believe that the content has been updated, as this is across the entire site it will increase robot visits and should lead to the site listings being updated. This should mean that any new pages will be picked up and indexed fairly rapidly.

2) All of the old websites pages are indexed and mapped to their counterpart pages on the new website using a 301 redirect (permanent redirect) and Mod-Rewrite. In most cases each page will have its associate page rank transferred to the new mapped page, but this is not always the case and it will take some time. Quite often search engine listings will initially drop in rank, as all of the site will appear new and then start to increase once the page rank is transferred. Some pages lose their page rank and popularity and it’s difficult to predict the reason behind this. Inbound links from 3rd party websites will be mapped to the new pages of the website using this strategy. Associated page rank will be transferred to the page but this will not be immediate and may take some time, anything from 1-3 months, depending on the linking sites importance. If possible it would be worth contacting link partners and directory sites in order to change the associated URLS. This can be a difficult and time consuming process and as a result it is sometimes more time and cost efficient to continue the sites ongoing search marketing strategy using the new URLS.

In order to help promote the indexing of new pages it will be essential to create regular XML sitemaps (Monthly or when the site has new content added.) and to submit them directly to the search engines, giving them a complete guide of the entire sites page structure.

As Google updates its policies, certain practices have become outdated: such as article marketing. It used to be that you could upload the same article to a slew of article directories – either manually or using an article submission service – and you could build up hundreds of inbound links when the article went into syndication. Now Google will discard all of the duplicates and keep one: not even necessarily the one with the highest page rank. This can still bring in traffic from different article sites, but it cannot improve page rank.

Blog commenting is another one that has lost some of its usefulness. A lot of new site owners have never heard of the concept of nofollow. The nofollow tag is a tag put on links that looks like rel=”nofollow” tag. So the code would end up looking like: < a onClick=”javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview(’/outgoing/article_exit_link’);” href=”http://www.yoursite.com” target=” rel=”nofollow” >. What this will do is ensure that Google spiders will not follow the link to your site: i.e. it will not affect page rank. Again, the link can improve traffic, but not your page rank.

Better Methods to Increase Page Rank

With these common pitfalls out of the way, what are some good ways to improve page rank given Google’s new criteria.

1. Identify Nofollow links. Firefox, for example, has a dofollow plugin that will reveal which links on a site are dofollow or nofollow (blue for dofollow, red for nofollow). This is a good way to test a site’s comment section. There are also dofollow directories, which link sites that have nofollow deactivated.

2. Write unique article content. It may be difficult to write ten different posts about the same topic, but it’s recommended. You can then upload ten different articles to ten different article sites. Ten quality backlinks is much better than one. More time put in = more page rank value.

3. On your blog, don’t just write basic information that may be covered elsewhere. Write topically: these are the articles that are the most likely to go viral. People like new news, not a new version on an old topic – however well-written it might be.

4. Get yourself the Google Adwords tool to determine the most marketable keywords in your niche: put these keywords in a title tag and content, without overdoing it. These older SEO tactics still work. You’d be surprised just how many sites still have a title that include a number, not the title of the post.

5. Register with Google Webmaster tools: it will reveal any problems with your HTML code, such as broken links. It will also help with faster spidering of your site.

6. Become a social networker. One thing that is overlooked about social networks is their page rank. It’s not just about traffic from the network. Your Digg link could rank very highly for an important title and post – well before your own site. The more social networks you belong to, the more chance one of those results will show up in SERPs. These links will also improve the page rank of internal pages of your URL – very important to overall page rank health.

7. Become an avid forum poster. Just having a link to your site in your forum profile and signature is helpful – but the more active you are in the forums, the more page rank strength you will send to your profile. Forum signatures are also great for traffic. See tip #1 for revealing which forums use nofollow or dofollow links.

8. Manually add your site to directories. It’s tedious but it’s still important for your page rank. Don’t rely on automated systems because a barrage of site directory links all at once can get you red-flagged by Google. Also, important: write different keywords and site descriptions before submitting your site. If you use the same description over and over this can be seen as duplicate content.

Finally, you should have a plan for all of the above strategies. Even if you have a modest goal of only five new links a day: through comments, directories (there are thousands of potential directories), forum posts, and so on, this will build up over time. By the time of the next Google page rank update, which occurs every three months or so, you will see positive results of your public page rank climbing higher.

   Now one very important tip be careful of multiple submissions sites, these are ones that advertise something like get 100 one way links for one submission. Often these sites work on a article spin meta tag. Basically you write an article and in each paragraph of the body you add the spin and an alternative sentence or paragraph then close the tag. This gives you two different sentences so search engines wont consider these to be duplicate content. Anyway this done through out the submission gives upto 100 different variations of the same article  Then the submission is posted onto a various different blogs/sites, all of which will have a slightly different variation to the same article. So yes this does sound all good if theory, saves aching fingers imagine how long it would take to write 100 different articles a long time right? Two problems, firstly search engines are not fools nor do they suffer fools lightly. That is to say that yes it maybe good for now and a sound principle but it is still a cheating way of doing things and the search engine providers will catch on and it could have negative consequences for you in the long run. Secondly you have no control on what the blogs it is being posted on. If your work is being published whose to say it isn’t being published on a site with very low value. If you are going to do it try to spin whole paragrapghs not sentences thus keeping the content rich and unique. I would advise against multiple submission unless you have a very diverse content rich article. Even then keep the amount of different submissions to under 10.

Article submission can be a great way to improve page rank but just be careful of the dangers of doing it wrong. Write unique content, dont plaigerise others work, beware of mutliple submissions and one last pointer dont write artciles on wikipedia for this purpose, check their rules and it clearly states it is against them to write for the purpose of backlinks and also they have a no follow robot txt. Which means one way links wont be tracked by search engines on that site, therefore no SEO value.

When I first started online marketing I kept hearing the so-called gurus shouting “The Money Is In Your List!” Up until that time the only list that meant anything to me was probably my grocery list. However, as I quickly became familiar with web marketing, list building became one of my key goals.

Mainly because list building is one of the vital elements to your Internet marketing success. It can play an important role in increasing your sales, getting repeat targeted traffic to your sites and a perfect vehicle for branding your product or company. Moreover, your list can be a primary source of business relationships which will help you build your online business since these contacts can be the cornerstones of your online marketing.

While I have fulfilled my main ambition of working full-time on the net, I have not as yet achieved my goal of reaching 100,000 subscribers. When I first started, my goal was getting 1,000 subscribers which I quickly passed, then it was 10,000 which was much harder to reach… getting to 100,000 will take much more time and effort but I believe I will get there eventually.

Maybe that number is a bit foolish, mainly because I learned long ago it is not the size of your list that counts, but how responsive it is. Still, it helps to have a goal set for yourself… and a 100k subscriber list is not an unreachable number especially when you’re talking about the Internet. There are probably more than a few pimply faced teenagers out there who have gotten triple that number of subscribers just by placing some silly videos on YouTube.

Many marketers also make the mistake that list building is all about sales and forget that your list is much more than just for monetary gain. It can be the basis for a whole wealth of ideas and interaction that goes well beyond how many sales you can squeeze out of your list. The really savvy marketers use their lists for market research, product development and treat their lists as a knowledge resource they can tap into, time and time again.

Your list building can also be the foundation of your own vibrant online community. A community that’s interactive and a great source of both ideas and business contacts. Probably the best example of this type of community building would be those communities that spring up through the social networking media sites… and Twitter would be a good example of this type of list building.

Invisible List Building

In studying and using lists over the years, some things have really surprised me. As an affiliate marketer I quickly realized most of my list building was invisible! This happened when I was fairly new at the marketing game, I had trouble with one of my site’s web host and I had to move the whole site to a different server and my site was down for several days… but the strange thing was my online sales from this site still kept coming even though my site was down.

I was totally puzzled (I can be rather slow sometimes!) until I realized or rather learnt the marketing power of cookies. Almost all of the affiliate programs I was promoting on my site were using cookies to mark the traffic or clicks coming from my site as my referrals. If anyone of these referrals made a purchase in the next 30, 60, 90 or more days – I would get credit for the sale.

My site was down, but because I had a whole list of cookied buyers lined up to purchase these affiliate products, my sales still kept coming. I was fairly new at this web stuff then and this was a real eye-opener for me. I started joining those affiliate programs that gave me the longest time-frame with their cookies. Most are around 30 days but there are quite a few that will give 365 days. Some affiliate programs such as Ken Evoy’s Site Build It and Marlon Sanders’ products even give you a life-time cookie.

In affiliate marketing using these “cookies” to build up hundreds of lists of “invisible customers” can be a very effective marketing strategy. You might not see these lists, but they’re quietly working for you in the background, bringing in sales even if your site is down or even when you have stopped a particular campaign.

Of course, the key here again, is how targeted is your marketing. You could have a million cookied customers lined up but if they have no real interest in your product – they won’t turn into buying customers. You must get the potential customer who has shown an interest in your product, onto your invisible cookie list. That’s why ranking high in organic search results for your chosen keywords plays a vital role in how much you earn online, especially if you’re into affiliate marketing. Going the PPC (Pay Per Click) route can also work but the profit margins are much closer.

Nor should you ignore building an actual opt-in list of customers to your autoresponder system in this whole process. Many marketers also try to “cookie” their actual opt-in lists as soon as possible in order to boost their sales. Your invisible cookie lists can work in conjunction with your so-called real lists. Along those same lines, one of my most effective marketing strategies is to use “micro” list building which is building hundreds of small lists of customers for each affiliate product that I promote. In the process of building these lists of potential customers, my first goal is to get these customers “cookied” with my affiliate ID. Then no matter if they buy directly from you or from some other link on the web; you still get credit for the sale.

Another effective marketing technique to use with your lists is to promote a whole group of related brand name products and MAKE SURE you cookie your list with ALL these different products so that no matter which one they eventually choose to purchase, you will still get credit for the sale. This way as a marketer you can come across as a helpful neutral third party pointing out the benefits and disadvantages of each product rather than a pushy salesperson pushing one product at your list. Nobody likes a pushy salesperson, so be a helpful friend instead.

Don’t ignore the effectiveness of these cookies or invisible lists in your online marketing. Used properly they can increase your sales dramatically. You can have hundreds of these invisible cookied lists working for you on the web. When you get down to the actual numbers, a list of 100,000 subscribers can pale in comparison. So next time anyone mentions list building to you, just remember you can always go incognito!
