Dot Com Lunch At Miku Restaurant

Posted on September 2nd, 2009 in Adsense, Adwords, Affiliate Marketing, Blogging, CPA, Clickbank, Google, List Building, PPC, Viral Marketing, Web Design, traffic | No Comments »

Over the past year, Miku has became one of my favorite Japanese restaurants to dine at. Now that I live in West Vancouver, Miku is only a short hop across the Loin’s Gate Bridge so the restaurant is slowly becoming one of my regular hangouts. However, I don’t recommend hanging out there everyday unless you enjoy spending $130 for lunch all the time.

Miku is the first North American restaurant of the Tora Corporation. Founded by Seigo Nakamura, Tora operates seven successful restaurants in Japan and has built up quite an enviable reputation. When it came time to invade the West, Vancouver was their city of choice. And you can’t really blame them. Vancouver has a large Asian population and is ranked the best city in the world to live. Plans are in the works to open restaurants in New York and Los Angeles. But for now, the only way to experience Miku’s famous Aburi-sytle sushi in America is to come to Vancouver.

No doubt, you’ve had sushi before. But I bet you’ve never had Aburi-style sushi before. When most people think of sushi, they most likely think of raw fish on rice served with soy sauce. Aburi-style sushi, on the other hand, is lightly seared with a touch, topped with some other ingredients and paired with a French sauce. It really adds a new dimension to plain sushi.

Located inside the Guinness Tower at 1055 West Hastings Street, Miku is at the heart of the Financial District and caters to a high end clientele. The restaurant is awe inspiring with its 20 feet floor to ceiling windows. Miku means “beautiful skies” and the restaurant carries out that theme by integrating a giant glass waterfall and glass clouds that literally float from the ceiling. You can tell that Mr. Nakamura spared no expense when creating Miku. He even flew in his own chefs and head servers from Japan.

The Miku lunch menu is every bit as impressive as their dinner menu. For people living the Dot Com Lifestyle, It’s a great place chill for a three hour lunch and watch all the suites hurry their lunch so they can get back to work on time. Sally loved their Miso Ramen Noodle and their Aburi Salmon with Garlic Butter Soy Sauce was the best salmon dish I’ve ever tasted. Everything else was simple amazing.

Breaking the Mold of “Make Money Online” Bloggers

Posted on September 2nd, 2009 in Adsense, Adwords, Affiliate Marketing, Blogging, CPA, Clickbank, Google, List Building, PPC, Viral Marketing, Web Design, traffic | No Comments »

Warning: gzinflate() [function.gzinflate]: data error in /home/webtraff/public_html/wp-includes/http.php on line 1787

two laptops

For an internet marketer, it can be difficult to resist the temptation to start a blog in the “make money online” niche. After all, it’s what many of us know and love best, so why wouldn’t we want to share our knowledge with the world (especially if we’re going to make money doing it)?

The problem, of course, is that this is a highly saturated niche. A quick Google search yields over 143 million results for the search term “how to make a living online”, while “make money online” returns a whopping 201 million results. Not only that, but as the state of the global economy continues to weaken, an untold number of employees-turned-entrepreneurs decide to throw their collective hat into the “make money online” ring every single day – chasing visions of fast profits and a more comfortable lifestyle.

Does this mean that you shouldn’t entertain the idea of launching a blog in this niche? Well, there are certainly less competitive niches available, and staking your claim in any of them would involve far less frustration and far fewer late nights hunkered over the keyboard. Still, the prospect of a vast, hungry audience (not to mention the potential for impressive profits) can simply make the “make money online” niche too attractive to pass up.

If you’re determined to build a profitable blog in this niche, differentiating yourself from the competition is critical. As counterintuitive as it might seem, the most effective way to do this is by crafting your content and marketing strategies to be relationship-based, rather than sales-based.

The Role of Relationships in Marketing

Remember the days before the internet became the primary information source for a substantial percentage of the world’s population? Back then, if marketers wanted to get a piece of the pie, all they had to do was launch a television or radio ad campaign, and consumers would line up to buy their products. People did as they were told, and it didn’t matter very much that marketers didn’t care about their buyers – marketers were the gatekeepers of information, and they could spin it pretty much however they pleased. Consumers, for their part, were mostly content to follow along, especially since advertising was considered a “necessary evil” which paid for the programming they enjoyed.

The rise of the internet brought with it a free exchange of information that chipped away at the authority of traditional marketers. Companies that had long relied on being able to tell consumers how to think were left scrambling for new ways to make sales. The ones that prospered were those which sought ways to connect with consumers – to make them feel valued and appreciated. The balance of power had begun to shift from the marketer to the consumer, a phenomenon that grew even more apparent with the emergence of social media.

After all, why believe what a marketer tells you, when you can visit a review site like Epinions, set up a poll on Facebook, or post a question on Twitter, and find out the truth in a matter of seconds?

The same power shift has become evident in internet marketing, as well – particularly in highly competitive niches. In years past, it was sufficient for an internet marketer to launch a blog, slap up some affiliate links, create a course or ebook, and wait for the money to roll in. Today, however, blog visitors want – nay, demand – to be engaged, listened to, and valued. Moreover, they gravitate toward marketers who are transparent, and who allow themselves to be accessible as human beings.

The principle that people buy from those whom they like, know, and trust is more relevant today than ever before.

How to Build a Relationship-Based Approach to Promote Your “Make Money Online” Blog

1) Only promote products that you would use yourself.

This sounds obvious, but it’s safe to say that many “make money online” bloggers choose products based on profit potential, rather than on whether the products can truly benefit readers and subscribers.

You should be prepared to state why you are recommending a particular product. This doesn’t mean engaging in hyperbole (there’s certainly no shortage of that in this niche); rather, it means showing in an unbiased manner the value you see in the product, and the value you believe it represents for your readers.

It’s equally important to highlight any potentially negative aspects of a product. If it isn’t suited to a segment of your reader base (e.g., newbies, people who can’t afford it, etc.), say so. If the product is lacking in a certain area, make that fact clear to your readers as well.

2) Respond to readers’ comments.

Readers take valuable time out of their days to comment on your blog posts. Responding to comments makes them feel as though that time was well spent. We comment on blog posts because we have something to say, and if you let us know that our voices are heard, well, that makes us feel special and valued. As a result, we’re more likely to buy from you.

3) Visit readers’ blogs.

If responses to our comments make us feel special, then visiting our blogs makes us feel downright important (especially if you leave a comment). Few things make us like and trust marketers more than realizing that they want to know more about us. You don’t have to read every post or leave a chapter-long comment – a paragraph or two is enough to win us over.

4) Connect with readers via social media.

The instant nature of social media gives you the opportunity to be seen as a human being rather than a faceless marketer hiding behind a blog. Of course, Twitter is the favored social media vehicle these days – since you’re limited to 140-character-or-less messages anyway, this is a great way to connect with readers on a personal level without giving up a huge chunk of time.

Many internet marketers use social media solely as a means of promoting their sites, products, and services. Although the occasional bit of promotion is fine, that’s not what social media is for. As mundane as it may sound, commenting on a reader’s tweet about what they had for breakfast can go a lot further toward developing a relationship than telling everyone about your latest product launch.

5) If you have the budget for it, don’t be afraid to use “snail mail”.

While electronic communication will go a long way toward helping you establish relationships with your readers, sending a birthday card or a simple “thank you for subscribing to my blog” note will have a dramatic impact on reader loyalty. Imagine going to the mailbox, expecting only a pile of bills, and finding a personal note from a blogger. It’s powerful because it’s unexpected, and because it shows that you value your readers enough to step away from the online world for a bit to let them know how important they are to you.

Building a relationship-based approach to blogging is often a time-consuming effort. It takes far more work to engage potential customers than it does to simply promote products and hope visitors buy from you. This is precisely why many “make money online” bloggers don’t do it – they don’t realize the rewards of investing in relationships, so they regard it as a waste of time.

For those of you who are willing to make the investment of time and effort, though, relationship building is the closest thing to a “sure bet” you’ll find in the internet marketing world.

Google Enable Multiple Ad Networks In AdSense

Posted on September 2nd, 2009 in Adsense, Adwords, Affiliate Marketing, Blogging, CPA, Clickbank, Google, List Building, PPC, Viral Marketing, Web Design, traffic | No Comments »

Google recently sent out the following email to all its AdSense publishers. Instead of serving just Google ads, Google is making it possible for the AdSense ad unit to run ads from other ad networks. This should increase revenue for the publisher since there’ll be more competition bidding on the ad space.

We’re writing to let you know about an upcoming update in your AdSense account designed to help you generate the maximum revenue from your ad units. You’ll soon be able to allow multiple ad networks to show on your pages, which means that advertisers from external Google-certified networks will be able to compete with AdWords advertisers for your ad space.

If you’re unfamiliar with what ad networks are, they’re companies that partner with advertisers and publishers to buy and sell ads on sites they don’t own themselves, similar to AdSense. Ads from these networks will compete with Google ads to show on publisher sites, and the ad generating the highest revenue for publishers will be displayed.

To ensure the quality of the ads appearing on your sites, we’re certifying all participating ad networks for adherence to our standards for user privacy, ad quality, and speed. You’ll also have control over which networks can show ads on your pages — you can choose to opt out of receiving ads from specific networks, or all networks completely. This means you can continue to show ads from only AdWords advertisers if you’d like.

Finally, some ad networks use tools similar to Google’s interest-based advertising to show more relevant ads to users on the sites they visit. These ad networks won’t be permitted to collect data from your site for the purpose of subsequent interest-based advertising, but we’ll allow those who comply with user privacy guidelines to show ads using these tools. You’ll have the ability to opt out of showing ads based on user interests from these ad networks, and we’ve changed our requirements for third-party ad serving to reflect this. More information is available at http://adwords.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=94230 .

These new capabilities will automatically be enabled for your account, and you’ll see a new section in your Ad Review Center where you can allow or block specific ad networks. Please note that we’ll gradually be adding new ad networks to AdSense accounts over the next few months, so you won’t see any immediate impact on your ads or your earnings.

Email Marketing Guide for Bloggers – The Auto Responder Sales Funnel

Posted on September 2nd, 2009 in Adsense, Adwords, Affiliate Marketing, Blogging, CPA, Clickbank, Google, List Building, PPC, Viral Marketing, Web Design, traffic | No Comments »

This is part three of my email marketing guide for bloggers. If you missed part one or two, you can read it here and here. In part three, I’m going to discuss the most important part of email marketing – the auto responder.

As the name implies, the auto responder sends out automatic replies to people who subscribe to your email list. Most bloggers make the mistake of not using any auto responders at all in their email marketing. Instead, they use their list to send out blog updates or additional “subscriber only” content. If that’s what you’re doing, then you’re missing out big time. The auto responder is how all the big email marketers make their money.

Setting Up The Auto Responder

When readers subscribe to my email list, they are sent a series of seven (soon to be nine) emails over the course of seven weeks. These emails are design to do three things.

  1. Build a relationship with the subscriber
  2. Promote my blog and brand
  3. Recommend products and services that help solve the reader’s problem

Email auto responder

Setting up the auto responder is extremely easy (the hard part is writing the contents for it) and is no different than sending out a normal newsletter. If you’re using Aweber, all you have to do is click “Follow Up” in the Message tab. This will allow you to create a follow up message to be sent to your new subscriber at a later date. Aweber allows you to set up an unlimited number of auto responders.

If you check the screen shot above, you’ll see that my first auto responder email goes out the instant someone signs up to my list. The second follow up email out goes out four days after the first and the rest goes out in one week intervals until there are no more follow ups. If you want to see it in action, you can subscribe to my blog by entering your name and email.

Creating An Auto Responder Sales Funnel

For lack of a better description, an auto responder sales funnel is where you take subscribers on one end, split them out the other end and have them part with their money. I like to run my Auto Responder Sales Funnel as a series of progressive steps designed to solve the reader’s problem. The first email is designed to build trust and authority and doesn’t try to sell anything. Here’s a copy of the first email subscribers receive when they sign up to my blog.

Hello {!name}

I want to thank you for downloading my free eBook, Make Money Online with John Chow dot Com. I hope it helps you achieve your blogging goals. I started my blog back in December, 2005 and it was amazing watching the blog grow from making zero to making over $40,000 per month in just two short years.

How I achieved this is detailed in my eBook. However, if you have any questions, feel free to email me and I’ll try to help you in any way I can. You can also connect with me on the following social media sites.

John Chow

PS – In case you haven’t download my free eBook yet, you can get it here:
http://www.johnchow.com/you need to subscribe to get it

Future emails carry the same type of tone are are designed to push the subscribes through the funnel so when they come out the other end, they have a solution their problem and I’ve been rewarded for helping them solved it. The auto responder sales funnel is the foundation of the blog’s backend sales system and is responsible for the majority of the blog’s income. The great thing about this is it’s fully automated and offers true passive income.

You should set up a series of five to ten emails to send to all new subscribers. Keep the three goals of building the relationship, promote your brand and recommend products that solve your reader’s problem in mind when writing the emails. Ideally, the recommended products and service should offer you an affiliate commission but that doesn’t always have to be the case. Recommending a product that you don’t make any money off can build more trust.

In order to maximum the income from your auto responder sales funnel, you have to test and keep testing. Little changes to the email copy can make a big difference. I review all my auto responder emails once a month to see if there’s anything I should add or subtract. The nice thing is, many subscribers reply to my auto responders and they provide valuable information on what I need to do to improve conversions.

If you have your email list set up with Aweber but haven’t created the auto responders yet, then you have your project for the next few days. If you don’t have a mailing list yet, then I recommend you head on over to Aweber and create one right now. Remember, the money is in the list!

Why Your Content Is Not Getting Read By Anyone!

Posted on September 2nd, 2009 in Adsense, Adwords, Affiliate Marketing, Blogging, CPA, Clickbank, Google, List Building, PPC, Viral Marketing, Web Design, traffic | No Comments »

Top Three Mini Commitment Errors You Are Making Right Now!

Does your content actually get read? When you are creating your blog posts, sales copy or emails, do you focus on what you want or what the reader wants?

I have a friend that I am helping with a new blog and it is in a niche he is extremely passionate about. The expertise and knowledge that he has about this topic (natural health) is incredible but his presentation sucks.

Not that he is not passionate about the topic and helping people… but the challenge he faces is he focuses the delivery of his content on assumptions and we all know that assumptions make an ass of u and me (ass u me).

Now I am not saying he is making an ass of himself at all… if anything that is farthest from the truth but if he did not have my help I could guarantee that he eventually would.

Over the past 2 years especially, I am seeing a huge amount of proof that as content providers, we NEED to focus on not getting our readers to make one big commitment but instead a bunch of mini commitments.

These small commitments are 1 to 2 second decisions that we all make and are what you want to focus on so that your reader will actually read your content.

Below are the 3 biggest assumption that I see being made everyday that cause your readers to NOT read your content.

1. Its Not How You Say it But What You Say

This is such a big stumbling block for so many people. We get stuck in our head that the content will do all the selling and we never pay attention to how we structure and present our content.

The internet has made us an ADD ( no disrespect to anyone diagnosed with ADD) audience and as youtube and twitter have proven to us… people want the content given to them with as little effort as possible and in a small of segments as possible.

Do not make people have to do a full page scroll more then 2 or 3 times MAX when reading your content and break your paragraphs up into no more then 3 to 4 sentences.

This PROVES to help people not feel overwhelmed by your content.

2.  People Want to Read What You Have to Say!

Sorry but 9 times out of 10 your biggest fan is usually yourself and the biggest mistake most people make when starting out is they think that people will want to read everything.

In the real world however, what usually happens is you end up talking way over your audiences head or you talk to them from more an encyclopedia stand point than actually relating to them from a personal perspective.

You need to relate to your reader and talk with them, NOT AT THEM. The micro commitment here is that they feel you relate to them right away and as a result they want to continue reading.

3. Your Title

I see so many posts on blogs that simply are two to three words that do nothing to get the readers attention.

The most effective thing you can do here is create a targeted headline (title) that is 5 to 9 words and gets your audiences attention and then immediately have a good sub headline that answers any questions the headline/title poses.

For example…

Headline –> LOSE 15 POUNDS IN 2 WEEKS!

Sub Headline –> New Diet Helps Increase Your Metabolism and Reduce Your Appetite With No Side Effects and Amazing Results!

This is just an example but you can see the headline gets thier attention and then the sub headline answers the question of how.

These are just three simple examples but the point here is remember… focus on talking to your reader, engage them, relate to them and do not overwhelm them with too many words.

What are your thoughts and comments?

Kill Your Competition… Bury Them… Beat Them…

Ya, I know that sounds rough and of course i do not mean literally.

Let me ask you this however, do you think your competitors ever stop and say…

“oh i cant do that, or i will rank better then them… thats not nice!”

That answer of course is no!

You have mouths to feed and as a result you need to ensure you get the results that will help you accomplish that.

This does not mean you do things unethical or immoral but it does mean you need to be serious about your business and your goals.

In about a week I am launching a beta for a brand new project I have been working on for over 2 years called Web2Mayhem!

This is a software and system I use in house and it was created by an employee that I had doing traffic generating for me…

He wanted life for himself to be easier!

Well I am of course going to be charging for access to this software… and no it is not going to be super expensive but there are two phases here.

The first door opening here is a beta group of only 200 people… this group is going to get it as cheap as possible because they will help ensure that the training material i created is good, and the software works in multiple different environments.

The second is opening it to everyone at full recurring price!

This is the very software I use to get to page on of Google for extremely competitive terms… in just days.

GET IT FOR FREE… oh and SyndicateKahuna too!

Part of the magic of this software that makes it so powerful is integrating it with our huge blog network of over 10000+ blogs.

Well that means that you will need access to those blogs as well as the Web2Mayhen software to get the full power.

To make it even better, you want to have a wicked tool for research… something that will tell you the exact niche you want to exploit.

So here is what I am doing… and originally I limited this to only 50… but now I am saying 200.

TOP
(As of 10:58am Wed Aug 30)

As you probably know, Keyword Elite version 2 launched today and it is in my opinion an extremely powerful tool.

That being said I am telling you that this is one tool you really want to invest in but it really does not cover the entire picture of what you need.

Keyword Elite combined with my Web2Mayhem however…

That is POWERFUL!

If you purchase KeywordElite version 2, with the below link, I will get you into Web2Mayhem for FREE for the first 2 months and then i will only charge you an extremely ridiculous low amount after that for each month.

I am not giving it for free forever though… cause it uses resources on my end that cost me money.

PLUS you also get access to SyndicateKahuna with this which is a $67 a month service by itself.

I am pulling this as soon as i hit 200… so go now…

Website Design & Being a Trusted Expert – Part 1

Posted on September 2nd, 2009 in Adsense, Adwords, Affiliate Marketing, Blogging, CPA, Clickbank, Google, List Building, PPC, Viral Marketing, Web Design, traffic | No Comments »

Before you implement your external communications strategy to bring customers in to your site, you need to make sure that your internal communications strategy is in order – that is, your website itself.

Cause the best PR and marketing campaign in the world won’t increase sales if your website sucks!

And how can it suck?

Oh, there are so many ways:  obvious problems like…

  • broken links
  • bad checkout process
  • hard-to-find contact information

to the more subtle problems like…

  • focusing on your products and your wants instead of your buyers
  • writing in a voice that’s going to alienate your identified personas
  • not having any useful information on the site to establish yourself as a thought leader
  • having bad SEO so no one can find your site
  • and so on and so on!

You need to fix these first so that when you do start promoting the site and driving traffic to it, you’re putting your best foot forward and presenting a strong, cohesive website that addresses the needs and wants of your potential buyers.

While this is not a design series, and I can’t teach you how to build a beautiful site (which is an art form in itself) I can help you fix the most common mistakes people make when building a website.  The tips I’ll give you are things that anyone, regardless of design and coding experience, can do to improve the effectiveness of their website.

To best leverage the power of the content that you are creating, you need to make sure that it is easy for visitors to find what they need on your site.  And you do this through smart design.

Again, concentrate on solving their problems rather than trying to sell your product. Where most people go wrong is that they base their website on their own companies internal organization structure, which makes it really easy for them to find things, but how does that help the target audience?  They don’t care about how you organize your company, they care about your problems.

Don’t forget the WIIFM? (what’s in it for me?) that drives their behavior.

To design your site properly (i.e. to get the most conversions) you need to learn as much as possible about the buying process for your product.  You need to know how people find your site, and the length of time in a typical buying cycle (i.e. small purchases, short buying cycle, medium purchases, longer buying cycle, large purchases such as cars or homes – much longer buying cycle.) and you need to focus on walking the potential buyer through micro commitments…

Do NOT try to get them to be committed to buying from you to soon!

More to come about exactly how to do that in Part 2…
